ABILITIES
Vanille grew up on a planet I fondly call fantasy Australia, where there's plenty of gorgeous scenery, animals, and plants, but the bigger or prettier it is, the more likely it will be to kill you. There are tortoises the size of mountains, plants the size of small buildings that no one's really sure are just plants since they have rows and rows of sharp teeth as well as roots for feet, wild giant birds capable of bearing riders, and flying animals that will literally eat people. Among other things. To top it all off, there are god-like beings capable of bestowing great power to humans, but at a deadly cost. Life on Gran Pulse is not easy and Vanille is used to fighting for survival. She comes from a an odd village with the technology level to have electricity and trains, but still live in a small communal area without cars or even much in the way of obvious domesticated animals. There are mentions of hunting and one can assume that the village is used to having to defend itself from predators. Gran Pulse is basically a crash-course in Don't touch that, it'll kill you and to survive even for a short time, one has to be able to adapt and fight for survival. Vanille is extremely adaptable, though, able to fit into Cocoon society almost flawlessly, even though she'd only woken up a few days prior. Given what weird conglomeration of technology and not-quite-modern life there seems to be in Oerba, it's probably not too far-fetched to say that the villagers can do a lot of "old-fashioned" things like weaving and spinning yarn (especially given Vanille has a scene of pulling wool off a large sheep). Also having been on the run for so long on Cocoon, she's gotten good at sneaking around and generally trying to avoid sticking out and drawing attention.

PERSONALITY
Vanille is loyal, caring, and yet easily frightened. She's extremely loyal to those she considers her friends and family, and would do almost anything for them. Almost. Her fear of the Focus given to her and Fang back in Oerba on Gran Pulse was what drove her to hiding everything. She pretended to have lost her memory when Fang did, after they woke up from crystal stasis, and for a while, she resolved to not do anything to further her Focus, so she wouldn't be responsible for hurting anyone else, like she had during her first Focus. She wasn't ready to destroy Cocoon the first time. She knows she's responsible for so many deaths and so much hardship. Her guilty conscience overrides everything else. She knows she's responsible for Serah's brand and it's her fault Dajh got branded, which makes her responsible for Sazh's brand as well. Vanille holds this guilt close to her and for a long time she hides it, wishing she could help but knowing she couldn't. At this point in her life, after the events of the game, she’s come to terms with what she’s done and now she’s willing to do what she has to in order to save her friends. She made a vow to save Cocoon and she sacrificed herself to keep that promise. Giving her word, making a promise, means so very much to her and once she promises something, she will do everything in her power to uphold that.

Vanille is also a bit of a runner. Not in the physical sense. She tends to hide things when they bother her, preferring not to deal with them until she has to. She does this from the point when she and Fang wake up on Cocoon (when Fang tells her she doesn’t remember their first Focus or anything about it, including what happened and how she became Ragnarok) and past when Jihl forces her to confront her fears at Nautilus by telling Sazh that Vanille was responsible for Dajh's branding. Vanille then explained her heritage to Sazh and what had happened. But not all of it. She still had yet to truly accept her Focus, but she was slowly coming to consider Cocoon and its inhabitants as her second home and family, transferring her loyalty to them in turn. Vanille only truly puts everything behind her and deals with it when Fang forces the truth out of her on Gran Pulse, on their way to Oerba. Only then does Vanille really allow herself to grieve and deal with the guilt and fear she feels.

The biggest part of Vanille's personality is the front she puts up when things are tough. She's very bubbly and energetic, known to bring life to the party when things are going badly. Vanille will tend to try to lie her way through things in order to not face her Focus, as she attempts to preserve Cocoon by allowing herself to turn Cie'th. She doesn't really care what happens to her as long as her friends are okay, and she's definitely not as dumb as she acts. She's not above using her supposed innocence to her benefit, especially if it covers her uncertainty and fear, and she exploits this as much as possible. While on the road with Sazh, they set down to sleep and she draws a line between them, telling Sazh not to cross it. By the time he wakes up again, she'd moved so her back was resting against his for comfort. In spite of her energy and bright outside, Vanille's inner persona is very much turned around and conflicted. She does her best to support, but at the end of the day, she's just a teenager who's been thrust into unimaginable pain and uncertainty. Her method of dealing with stress and fear is to not let it show, preferring to cry alone and in secret than with someone else (unless that someone else is Fang).

She's very much a people person and is always good for a hug, especially for Hope, or support and her friends are her first priority, especially Fang. No matter what's going on with her, she'll always want to make sure they're okay and do what she can to help them. She's not very difficult to read, if a person's been around her long enough, as Fang proves several times. Fang has always been her family and Vanille considers her at least a sister. She'll listen to Fang above all others and turns to Fang when life troubles her.

She also tends to pick up little traits of other people, like when Serah says to "face it later," Vanille takes that line to heart and even repeats it to Hope when she attempts to help him get past his mother's death. Vanille really tries to do the right thing when all's said and done; she just has trouble dealing with it. However, beneath all that lies determination. Once she sets her mind to something, she'll carry it out. She's tougher than she looks, having killed a bear all by herself once. She's sunny, but she has resolve as well. When Sazh finally learns of her involvement in Dajh's fate, she accepts her fate and is ready to let him kill her for what she's done. When he refuses, she vows to do what she can to help him and Dajh. When things really get bad, Vanille does her best to deal and move on, though she will always carry with her the memories and the guilt.
